The Spanish baby-jumping festival

Every June the Spanish village of Castrillo de Murcia celebrate Corpus Christi. During this time, they hold their annual baby-jumping festival. Yes, you read that correctly. The event consists of men dressed up as El Colacho (the devil) leaping over babies born during the previous twelve months of the year.

So, the infants lay on matresses in the street, and a scary man in a devil suit jumps over them. Yeah, that’s not weird or dangerous or anything. But apparently the act symbolizes the devil leaving the children behind and taking his evil with him, and they are then cleansed of sin.
