Emancipation in Venice: First Lady Gondolier(a)!

Include image
Giorgia Boscolo, the first woman gondolier, pilots her gondola yesterday in Venice. Picture: Andrea Pattaro/AFP

Standing room only on Giorgia's Gondola, now that she is a celebrity in this ancient and charismatic but macho city. As part of her training she had to undergo many hours on the gondola simulator, of course, before she was allowed out onto the choppy and treachorous waters of the Grand Canal. We don't want any complaints about lady punters, now do we!

Second Punter
I may be mistaken but there seems to be another stick weilding person with striped garb at the rear of this craft. So I don't think she is sailing solo just yet. Maybe she is just a Figure-Head!

Rick Stein
Also interesting to see Rick Stein, the celebrity chef, standing behind her and supporting her ground-breaking, water-breaking or wind-breaking, efforts. No doubt he is off to some exotic restaurant to dine al fresco, and indulge in a nice plate of fresh pasta, washed down with a warm bottle of Lambrusco, a particular favourite with the English abroad.

The Hazards of Bad Punting is all too Apparent!
Careful! You'll have someone's eye out with that!
